Erika Christian, MS, LAC

I am a native of Arizona, and I hold a Master’s of Science in Counseling from University of Phoenix. Julia Spain, LPC is my supervisor as I complete my hours for independent licensure. I seek the roads less traveled within our state, and I have many fond memories of living and working in Central and Southern Arizona. I was raised in Tempe and Phoenix, and I also lived in Sahuarita, Casa Grande and Gilbert. My husband and I have been married for over 30 years, and we have seen the beauty of the world in our professional and personal journeys. We are still trying to decide upon a pet for our household. We have one grown son who lives with his fiancée and their cat.

Why I became a Counselor

Working with clients who have experienced one or more significant traumatic events as a result of their work, environments or relationships is my passion. I believe strongly that our nervous systems are very good at protecting us and that sometimes things need to be gently rewired to create space for feeling safe and more contented. Learning healthier skills and practices for calming our minds, bodies and souls/hearts help us to feel better and shift into connection with who we really are at our cores. Genuine change does not occur in a vacuum nor does it occur in a straight line, and yet with trust and patience, change is possible. It is a gift to witness growth within my clients. DBT, CBT and EMDR are the areas in which I am trained to provide professional counseling, and I also use mindfulness, existential and psychodynamic approaches. Treatment plans are tailored to client needs and goals, taking into consideration strengths, personalities, and areas for growth.

Off work

When I am not working, I hike, walk, bike and spend time with friends and family. I also like to try my hand at growing vegetables in the desert, which is fun and not an easy thing to do. I listen to music every day.

Favorite books

Mysteries are my favorite genre, and I especially like Agatha Christie. I like to read about physics because it fascinates me. My guilty reads are novels by Stephen King.

Favorite shows and movies

My favorite shows are Young Sheldon, Golden Girls, MASH, Miss Fisher Mysteries, and currently I’ve been watching Animal Control. I like all of the Mike Flanagan produced and directed shows. Some favorite movies of mine are The Green Mile, French Kiss, L.A. Confidential, Knives Out (all three), and Murder on the Orient Express.

Favorite music

I enjoy many kinds of music.
