Women's DBT Meditation & Skills Group. Wednesdays at 12:00. Mesa
Hello, my name is Courtney. My closest friends and family call me Court. I have my license in social work, and practice under the direct supervision of Julia Spain, LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor). I graduated with both my bachelor’s and master’s in social work from Arizona State University.
Home town - Arizona
I was born in Massachusetts and raised in New Hampshire. I have lived in Arizona for eight years. I moved to Arizona to be closer to my family. I love the Arizona winters as it is my favorite time of year here. I grew up with animals and currently have a cat named Maximus. I love dogs too. My dream dog is a chocolate Labrador Retriever with green eyes.
Why I became a counselor
I became a therapist because for as long as I can remember, helping people has been the sole factor in cultivating joy in my life. I was raised in a family where giving service to others was modeled from a very young age.
I also have experienced the death of loved ones very close to me from substance use. The death of my eldest brother was the most difficult loss for me. Jason’s passing led me into this career as well as my deep desire to give back to those battling any type of mental health challenge.
I have experience working in psychiatric hospitals and working with other challenges including anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, self-improvement, self-worth, trauma and more. I have also worked at detoxification centers and rehabilitation centers. My heart is full of empathy and understanding for those struggling with any of life’s challenges and I would love to be able to support you in your healing journey.
A large part of what I focus on is how to rebuild one’s relationship with themselves. I use psychoanalysis, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, EMDR trauma therapy, self-examination and more to help clients move towards their goals. I like to tell clients that we look at the family of origin and one’s life experiences and traumas, not to find blame but to help them understand some of the whys for their current challenges. I am a believer that what we tell ourselves becomes our reality so when we validate and show understanding and compassion towards ourselves, that has a ripple effect onto other relationships in our lives. Not only that, but when we accept ourselves and can show ourselves compassion, we make better choices that exude self-respect.
I believe that people are capable of growth and positive changes, I have seen the impact of this in my own inner work and in my clients. You are worth doing the inner work for, you matter, and I hope you will give yourself a chance. I am a proponent of listening to the client and going at a pace that is comfortable for them.
What I like to do when I am off work
In my free time, I enjoy watching my favorite shows, some of which are Welcome to Flatch and Schitt’s Creek. I love movies as well. I also spend time at the gym, doing yoga, meditating, enhancing my spirituality, spending time with loved ones and friends, and attending support groups.
Favorite movies and shows
One of my favorite movies is Gladiator.

A book I read in college that has become one of my favorites is called The Body Keeps the Score. It discusses trauma and explains the ripple effects of its influences
